Prisoners found entering this liminal zone a strange experience: one that did not seem real. One prisoner said:

It feels strange and different. It almost doesn’t seem real. I have to think about it. I’ll be watching TV at one point and then I’ll look and realise I am in the cell and then it kicks in again.

This was particularly the case for those who had never been in prison before. The sense of disbelief encompassed their transitional experience. I asked one prisoner:

Interviewer: When you were walking through to the wing what was going through your head?

Prisoner: I was thinking I see this on TV. I never thought I’d ever see myself walking down here going into a cell. I just thought I only see that on TV. I never thought it would come to this. I couldn’t believe it basically.
